Is Radiant Heat Worth The Cost?
Radiant heat is of interest to many homeowners because it is a better kind of heat than the forced air that is in so many houses. Unfortunately, if you have a house that is already built, it will be expensive to install a radiant heat system. Many people get around this by installing radiant heat in just a couple of rooms, usually the master bathroom and sometimes the kitchen.
Most homes are now built with forced air heating and redoing everything can be costly. For this reason, many people choose to have radiant heat installed in only a select few rooms that are most often the master bathroom and the kitchen.
If you choose to have radiant heat installed in just one room or a couple of rooms, your best choice is probably electric radiant heat. This is because electric pads can be brought in and installed under the floors with a fair amount of ease and at a reasonable cost. The other common type of radiant heat is the hydronic variety that involves putting pipes of heated running water under the floors. This is a much bigger undertaking that the electric pads and can be much more expensive.
You will sometimes find a home that has radiant ceiling heat. This is rare though, and not really recommended. Heat rises and so if the heat is already starting at the top of the room, it will have much less of a heating effect than if it started at the floor level. If you look into getting radiant heat for your home or for a few homes, make sure you question any contractor who recommends ceiling radiant heat. Make sure that there are no other options before you choose that route.
When given a choice, most people would prefer radiant heat to forced air, as it is silent and better for your skin. All you have to do is live through a cold winter to notice how dry your skin gets. The constant pumping of dry heat into our houses by the forced air systems just makes our skin feel worse.
