Ingrown pubic hairs can be very painful. The advice notes below will cure the problem quickly and greatly help reduce the risk in the future!

First, some background information. Ingrown hairs are known as Psuedofolliculitis Barbae (PFB), razor bumps, razor burn, hair bumps, shaving bumps, ingrowns.

Psuedofolliculitis Barbae refers to hair which has been cut or broken off below the skin level which then begins to grow through surrounding tissue rather than out of the follicle. In other cases, hair curls round and starts growing back into the skin causing irritation and inflammation.

Hair naturally has a tapered end. Shaving in the pubic region removes that smooth end so the remaining hair is now sharp. It has the potential to cut through the surrounding skin as it grows.

The skin in the genital area is thinner and more sensitive than other parts of the body so when hair is pulled out or shaved off, the skin can react and create conditions for ingrown hairs.

Here's how to cure and prevent ingrown pubic hairs in the future:

A hot compress can help trapped hairs release and pop up above the surface of the skin. Just hold the compress over the sensitive area for 10 minutes or so and repeat this three times a day until the condition is eased.

Tight fitting clothing can cause a problem after a hair removal session as it can put pressure on the skin and cause hair to grow in unusual ways. So wear loose-fitting clothing while you are treating the ingrown hair and especially after your next hair removal session.

Exfoliating the area before waxing can help as this takes away some of the dead skin cells which accumulate and which can contribute to causing hairs to be trapped.

You can purchase creams, body gels, or lotions that exfoliate the skin. Or if you prefer, ask for a washcloth or glove designed for exfoliation from the beauty section at your local department store. They are slightly abrasive and ideal for the job.

If you are already suffering with ingrown pubic hairs, then avoid exfoliating the skin as this may only make matters worse.

Avoid breaking the hair below the surface of the skin if you use waxing or sugaring hair removal methods. Practice so you can take the hair out in one pull back right from the root. Of course, if you find pubic areas difficult to treat with hair removal you can always pay a professional at a beauty clinic.

If ingrown hairs are quite deep you need to get a pair of needle nosed tweezers. Sterilize them with rubbing alcohol and then, perhaps using a magnification mirror, ease each ingrown hair out of the hair follicle. Be sure to sterilize the area afterwards also with the rubbing alcohol.

If needle-nosed tweezers are not available, wipe a pin or needle and the ingrown area with rubbing alcohol, then carefully release the hair in the direction that it grows using the tip of the needle only. After the hair is released, wipe the skin with alcohol again.

Pubic hair removal is now very common for both men and women. For this reason ingrown pubic hair will always be a risk after hair has been pulled out or cut off through shaving.
