What Should You Know About Accutane for Treating Acne
Accutane is the brand name for the drug Isotretinoin. It is taken in pill form and has been widely available since 1983 with a prescription from a Dermatologist. Its purpose is to regulate, control and reduce excess sebum production from the sebaceous glands.
Accutane isn't cheap. The medication costs anywhere from $500 to $600 for a standard course of treatment which is about 16 weeks. Most drug plans cover the costs - though they will usually place some limits on coverage.
Taking this medication is generally safe under strict doctors care, however, there are many risks to consider prior to taking Accutane that one needs to be aware of. Cost not withstanding, the potential harmful side effects can be devastating.
Some side effects include but are not limited to the following:
* Avoid using vitamin preparations or health food supplements that contain vitamin A.
* Women are advised to not take this drug while pregnant given strong evidence of causing birth defects.
* Possible risk of depression and suicidal thoughts
* Aches and pain
* Possible damage to the organs such as the kidneys and liver
* Dry skin and sensitivity to the sun
It is recommended that not everyone should be treated using Accutane since it's such a strong medication with some serious side effects. While those with severe nodular acne have been helped by this drug not everyone should be on this type of treatment. You should speak with a Dermatologist if you have any confusion over the severity of your acne and if you have been unsuccessful treating your acne using other treatment methods.
Even serious side effects do not stop most people from trying Accutane as they feel the benefits of acne-free skin are worth the potential risks. Other acne patients might start looking for alternative treatments because the treatment has been ineffective or they have had too many adverse side effects.
These days it's not uncommon for people to turn to holistic types of acne treatments in order to avoid harmful effects of medication. Alternative acne treatments include taking vitamins and minerals known to combat acne, making dietary changes, and using herbal and natural remedies to treat acne symptoms. Other all natural products such as Vilantae claim to cure acne and are natural alternatives to Accutane. But, you should do your research especially with products that make large claims. Herbal products can carry it's own type of side effects that you should be aware of. Always read the labels and find out what the potential side effects are before trying any new treatment.
It can be extremely difficult to find the right acne treatment. Medication is not always the right choice for everyone and if you are concerned about potential side effects you should do your homework about alternative or natural treatment options that are available. With some persistence and education you will find the treatment that is best for you.
