Facts You Should Understand In Order To Get Rid Of Acne And Prevent Skin Damage
For many people, acne is a fact of life. It is often tough to get rid of acne. Many times, people will get rid of acne for a while, but then it flares up again later, even into one's adult life.
The first step in getting rid of acne is to stop using cosmetics that are oil based. These cosmetics tend to clog the pores and cause acne to be worse. Mechanical oils or greases and cooking oils can also cause the pores to be plugged. This is why the kid that works in fast food who already has an acne problem has even more difficulty in keeping the problem cleared up.
In addition, you need to stop using any harsh soaps or facial cleansers. These soaps and cleansers are actually more harmful than helpful. They tend to strip the oils and moisture that are useful in healing from your face. Instead choose a gentle cleanser that removes excess oils, dirt or debris from your face. This dirt can clog pores and cause another breakout.
Stop any pinching, poking, popping or prodding of pimples. It will not get rid of acne and may make it worse. Since fingers are often loaded with foreign oils and bacteria, they can often exaggerate the problem. Additionally squeezing a zit can cause damage to the sebaceous glands and eventually lead to a pimple that is infected.
Use an acne lotion that is approved by a dermatologist to help get rid of acne. These lotions help to break down the oils on the skin and to kill bacteria that cause the blemishes on the skin. In addition they promote the shedding of dead skin cells. These lotions may contain sulfur, salicylic acid or resorcinol.
Yo0u may need to seek the help of a dermatologist to treat your acne. The doctor's first step is to prescribe an acne lotion. This lotion may contain one of the vitamin A derivatives such as Retin-A or Differin. These products cause the dead skin cells to slough off from the skin. When these treatments are combined with mild antibiotic topical treatment, they help to control all but the most severe cases of acne.
For many years, the next line of defense was the use of stronger antibiotics, which were often effective; however, the everyday use of antibiotics has been challenged in recent years, so some dermatologists are switching to drugs such as Accutane. Accutane is very effective, but has several severe side effects. Ask your doctor about the side effects before you take Accutane. Some of the side effects include rectal bleeding and depression.
As a final alternative that is often used for women, some oral contraceptives are prescribed to clear up the acne. The birth control pills manipulate the hormones so there are some side effects to this treatments also. Be sure to consider the side effects before you choose this alternative.
Persons that have scarring the is the result of previous acne outbreaks may want to consult with a plastic surgeon. Usually, plastic surgery is considered a last option.
